I agree the most with Marie Collins Swabey's idea that incongruity is found humorous because the two aspects are irrelevant to one another in a acceptable scenario. Often the humor is found within the topic of discussion because the two concepts are dissimilar. Swabey distinguishes that there are two forms of incongruity, logical and factual, and that the context in which incongruity is utilized may differ. Logical, which infringe on the laws of logic, are usually entertaining because the person utilizing the logical incongruity makes a false statement, which overlaps with the idea of superiority theory. Logical incongruity appeals to our sense of rational form where as factual appeals more to the incompatibility of certain topics. This form of incongruity is demonstrated when the association of said topics are viewed as incompatible or abnormal to the audience.
Although Roger Scruton disagrees with the theory that the abnormality of the incongruent pairing of two ideas in not what makes something humorous, I find his argument that characters and the congruency of their actions or words with their personality makes them humorous. Within the show "Shameless", Frank, the neglectful and alcoholic father of numerous children who have to navigate life without a guardian, is humorous because the audience is expecting his cruel and unusual actions. Because the audience is aware of the type of character Frank is, the further he pushes away from his family is more comedic. However, Frank's character is meant to shock so the idea that this he represents congruency contradicts itself and is still in a way incongruent.

  1. Congruency in such cases as Frank is really a congruency with a pre-existing incongruence. Each time, the same incongruity is reinvented. The situation is normal--all f$!%@&# up, as they say in the military.

Response to Madelyn's Blog

The amount of memes that I saw during the time of Hurricane Florence was wild. What shocked me even more and added to the humor of many of the posts, tweets, or memes was the fact that those who were being directly affected by Florence were the people making light of the situation. Like the individual who was forced to close their store that Madelyn refers to, many individuals, though suffering great losses, made these jokes and memes about the great destruction that was caused. These example of the people who were suffering the most but making the most jokes about the destruction, are perfect examples of relief theory. While most the country was terrified and worried about the effects of Hurricane Florence, some individuals were able to relieve this tension and worry through their nonchalant posts that found humor within the situation. While many of the posts I witnessed usually depicted once instance of the hurricane's devastation, the account that an individual made from the per...

The Office is truly an iconic show that inspired a new generation of pop-culture sitcoms that abandoned relying on punchline jokes for the main source of comedy, and rather uses dry humor and interview-like scenes with the main characters, allowing the audience to gain more intimate perspectives on them and their feelings. Instead of relying on punch-line oriented humor, the audience often relates and finds humor within the character's reactions, highly zoomed in upon during their interview like shots. Sonali makes the argument that The Office relies predominantly on incongruity theory and I completely agree. Michael Scott often makes comments and behaves in wildly inappropriate ways that working professionals would not deem suitable for the environment. Sonali also pointed out that the characters often react to certain situations with comments or actions, like Kevin attempting to raid the vending machine during a fire drill, that are incongruous with the scenario. I also believe t...
